It’s no secret that Broadway is pretty behind on creative team diversity. With the pact made by Black Theatre United that was signed by many industry professionals, we can hope for change in the near future. For now, here are some upcoming productions to look out for that have gender-diverse creative teams that we’d like to point out:

Clyde’s

Playwright Lynn Nottage has teamed up again with frequent collaborator, and director, Kate Whoriskey for this play’s New York premiere. Clyde’s focuses on a callous truck stop sandwich shop owner (Uzo Aduba) who offers the formerly incarcerated kitchen staff a shot at redemption as they attempt to achieve their dream…creating the perfect sandwich.

The creative team also includes Takeshi Kata (Scenic Design), Jennifer Moeller (Costume Design), Christopher Akerlind (Lighting Design), Justin Ellington (Sound Design) and Justin Hicks (Original Compositions).

Dates: First preview – November 3, 2021. Opening night – November 22, 2021

Birthday Candles

This new play by Noah Haidle (making his Broadway debut!) features Debra Messing’s return to the stage as a woman pondering her significance in life. The show’s creative team is female-led, with director Vivienne Benesch, scenic designer Christine Jones, costume designer Toni-Leslie James, lighting designer Jen Schriever, sound designer John Gromada and original music by Kate Hopgood.

Dates: First preview – March 18, 2022. Opening night – April 10, 2022

1776

A revival of one of Broadway’s classics, this production of 1776 is gender diverse on—and off—stage. The cast is made up of female, non-binary and trans individuals. Directed by Diane Paulus, this production also features choreography by Jeffrey L. Page, set design by Scott Pask, costumes by Emilio Sosa, lighting design by Jennifer Schriever, sound design by Jonathan Deans, projections by David Bengali, music supervision by David Chase, vocal design by AnnMarie Milazzo and orchestrations by John Clancy. Nadia DiGiallonardo and Ryan Cantwell are co-music directors.

Dates: 1776 plans on opening in fall 2022.

Like Water for Chocolate

The Grammy Award-winning quartet, La Santa Cecilia, is taking a step into the world of musical theatre with this new adaptation of Laura Esquivel’s novel and the Golden Globe-nominated 1992 film. The quartet, comprised of lead singer Marisol "La Marisoul" Hernandez, accordionist and requinto player Jose "Pepe" Carlos, bassist Alex Bendaña and percussionist Miguel "Oso" Ramirez is joined by co-lyricist Quiara Alegría Hudes, book writer Lisa Loomer and director Michael Mayer.
